Stansky, Peter & William Abrahams. ORWELL The Transformation. NY: Alfred A. Knopf, (c. 1979) 1980.
Dark gray cloth, bright silver lettering. HARDCOVER. Notes. Index. 4p b/w photos. BIOGRAPHY. This book picks up where the authors' previous biography of Orwell, THE UNKNOWN ORWELL, left off. It carries us forward into the crucial years of the mid-1930s, the years in which the novice writer Eric Blair evolved into the George Orwell we know today - the years of early publication, of marriage, and of Spain. Here are the major decisions and crises of his life, those that transformed a minor novelist with little interest in politics into so large and important a writer with so defined and powerful a view and a mission. Drawing on Orwell's own work, as well as on letters, documents, and extensive interviews with those who knew him, the authors discuss these years in admiring but by no means uncritical detail, as they reveal the unfolding genius of one of the major writers of our time. ; 8-1/2" Tall; 302 pages. 0394473949.

Eggers, Dave: A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius. Deutscher Titel: Ein herzzerreissendes Werk von umwerfender Genialität. Eine wahre Geschichte. 3. Auflage. New York, Vintage/Random House, 2001..
At the age of 22, Dave Eggers became both an orphan and a "single mother" when his parents died within five months of one another of unrelated cancers. In the ensuing sibling division of labour, Dave is appointed unofficial guardian of his eight-year-old brother, Christopher. The two live together in semi-squalor, decaying food and sports equipment scattered about, while Eggers worries obsessively about child-welfare authorities, molesting babysitters and his own health. His child-rearing strategy swings between making his brother"s upbringing fun and performing bizarre developmental experiments on him. (Case in point: his idea of suitable bedtime reading is John Hersey"s Hiroshima . A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is also, perhaps less successfully, about being young and hip and out to conquer the world (in an ironic, media-savvy, Generation-X way, naturally). In the early 1990s, Eggers was one of the founders of the very funny Might Magazine, and he spends a fair amount of time here on Might, the hipster culture of San Francisco"s South Park and his own efforts to get on to MTV"s Real World. This sort of thing doesn"t age very well--but then, Eggers knows that. There"s no criticism you can come up with that he hasn"t put into A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius already. "The book thereafter is kind of uneven," he tells us regarding the contents after page 109, and while that"s true, it"s still uneven in a way that is funny and heartfelt and interesting. All this self-consciousness could have become unbearably arch. It"s a testament to Eggers"s skill as a writer--and to the heartbreaking particulars of his story--that it doesn"t. Eggers comes from the most media-saturated generation in history--so much so that he can"t feel an emotion without the sense that it"s already been felt for him. What may seem like postmodern noodling is really just Eggers writing about pain in the only honest way available to him. Oddly enough, the effect is one of complete sincerity, and--especially in its concluding pages--this memoir as metafiction is affecting beyond all rational explanation. --Mary Park Verlagsfrisches Exemplar. ISBN-13: 978-1-58477-223-1. ISBN-10: 1-58477-223-9. Cloth. * In the foreword, John H. Wigmore writes: "The essays here collected are a rich revelation of a genius at once critical and constructive in the highest degree... No modern writer in that field has excelled him-and only one or two have equaled him-in mastery of the entire complex of Federal decisions and in firm grasp of constitutional principles." And of Schofield's style Wigmore raves: "Once entered upon his text the reader is carried along irresistibly by the sheer pleasure of following the reasoning. No modern law writer has a style at once so personal and yet so entirely scientific." Foreword vi, vii. Marke, A Catalogue of the Law Collection at New York University (1953) 402.

Japanese Poetry Yasuda, Kenneth: The Japanese Haiku: Its Essential Nature, History, and Possibilities in English, with Selected Examples, Charles E Tuttle Co, Rutland, VT, 1971 ; 1. Ed. ISBN: 080480303X
Condition: Nr Fine in Good- DJ. DJ price clipped. Orig owners name and address stamped inside back cover. Book Size 8vo.

The Haiku, a highly compact, evocative verse-form crystallized by the Japanese poetic genius, embodies a direct, intuitive penetration into nature and life that is at once simple and baffling. Many Western poets, have attempted it in English, but most have failed to capture its deceptive simplicity, its packed, vibrant imagery and lighting flashes of intuition. Here for the first time in English the subtle nature and beauty of the haiku is revealed in lucid commentary that emphasizes its rightful place in the realm of poetry. LCCN 57-8795. 232 Pgs.
