Germaine Krull's second published book after the stunning Modernist Metal of 1928. Although more evidently traditional than the former work, in Etudes de Nu Krull's depictions are exquisitely beautiful and she adheres throughout to her dictum from the Preface: 'L'appareil n'a pas a inventer, a combiner, a truquer. Ce n'est pas de la peinture, ni de l'imagination. Le photographie est un temoin. Le temoin de son epoque.''The great fascination of Etudes de Nu is in observing Krull's struggle with the conventions of the nude genre, her own sensibilities, and the restrictions regarding the photographic nude that pertained even in Paris.'
