However, as an introduction to William Hogarth it is excellent. I have stud ied Hogarth many times, and always found this book of use. It contains biog raphy and social history which is essential when dealing with Hogarth's wor k: he was the ultimate C18 social commentator. This book goes through his d ifferent styles, projects, subjects and works, while being user friendly an d far from bamboozling, as some art history volumes can be. Bindman also, a part from writing about the art, writes about the artist in such a way as y ou really get to know and understand him, which makes reading far more fun than is to be expected, especially when you deal with such a character as H ogarth. I used this book at GCSE and A'Level and also found it the recommen ded Hogarth volume of the bibliography of my BA course: a proof of both div ersity and quality.
