Sir George MacKenzie of Rosenhugh [1636-1691], "became notable for his resistance to the pretensions of the Crown, but in 1677, he was made Lord Advocate and in the next few years prosecuted and persecuted Covenanters with such zeal as to earn the title 'The Bloody Mackenzie.' In many cases he strained the law so as to obtain a conviction.": Walker, Oxford Companion to Law 792. He is also well-known for having founded the Advocates Library, now the national law library for Scotland. In contrast to Mackenzie's behavior on the bench, the Laws and Customes is notably moderate, especially in the sections dealing with witchcraft.

Brown, Stewart J.: Thomas Chalmers and the Godly Commonwealth in Scotland. Oxford etc.: Oxford University Press 1982. ; 1. Ed.
xviii, 438 S. Orig.-Leinenband mit Umschlag. "Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), the Scottish Evangelical social reformer and ecclesiastical politician, is probably best known for his role in the Disruption of 1843. In this dramatic break-up of the national religious establishment of Scotland he led nearly half the membership out of the Established Church to form the Free Church of Scotland, rather than submit to what he regarded as the subordination of the Church's spiritual authority to State domination." Text in englischer Sprache. Erste Ausgabe. Schönes, gut erhaltenes Exemplar.
