Very good. <p>This remarkable literary and art magazine, staffed, written and illustrated by students of DeWitt Clinton High School in New York City was put out during the years of the Great Depression and ceased publication in the 1970s. Many of the abundantly talented teenage contributors went on to become celebrated artists and writers in their fields. Though not included in this issue, James Baldwin's earliest published work appeared in Magpie. The art editor of the magazine was master printmaker Robert Blackburn [b. 1920], who grew up in Harlem and was influenced by the Harlem Renaissance, as well as by European abstract art, American social realism and Mexican modernism. He went on to change the course of American art through his graphic work and the Printmaking Workshop, which he founded in 1948. This issue of Magpie includes six strikingly beautiful full-page graphic works by Blackburn. Also in this issue are six short poems under the title "Observations" by photographer Richard Avedon; and a piece on fencing by Emile Capouya who went on to Columbia and Oxford universities, was captain of the fencing team and became a translator and editor of major European writers. He was literary editor of The Nation from 1970 to 1976.
