Hardcover Illustriert Farbig 4to Quart

Matthews, Greg: The Further Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, NY Crown Publishers, Inc. 1983

Book and dust jacket appear in tight, unread condition. No remainder markings. The esteemed critic and author Guy Davenport felt that Greg Matthews historical fiction "...[allows us to] see ourselves when we look into this...mirror of the [past] and the collision of human cultures...Seeing our own conflicts in another time and place allows us the unique sort of understanding that comes from simultaneous objectivity and involvement. It is to Greg Matthews's considerable credit that his distant world evokes for us that 'felt relationship to the present' Lukacs thought essential to the historical novel." Stephen King said: " Greg Matthews [is] one of the two or three most important novelists now writing in America and writing about her....I am...reminded of Charles Dickens. " '"There was another book I writ before this one which give the story about how me and Jim went down the river on a raft....' 'The Further Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' is a captivating continuation of America's favorite novel. Taking-up where Mark Twain left off, this funny, touching story continues the exploits of Huck Finn and his best friend, Jim, as they "light out for the Territory." What became of the irrepressible Huck and Jim after their well-known adventures on the Mississippi? In this rousing tale set during the Gold Rush of 1849, Huck and Jim, two of literature's most intrepid innocents, take off from Missouri across the Great Plains, heading west for California. Their story is packed with boundless suspense, thrills, and cliff-hangers as Huck and Jim encounter Injuns, gospel singers, whores, preachers, gamblers, holy men, and enough other rich and colorful characters (and scrapes!) to delight the most avid Twain fans.An unerring reproduction of Twain's distinctive style, 'The Further Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' is also an original and entertaining adventure in its own right. After three-quarters of a century, it is a joy to have grand-scale classic adventure back with us again." - dust jacket flaps. "It takes gumption for a writer to resurrect Huck Finn in his first novel, but Matthews has done it admirably well....A high-spirited charmer." - Publishers Weekly. "An extremely skillful sequel to the Twain masterpiece..." - Kirkus Reviews. " In this novel Mr. Matthews steps easily into the shoes of Mark Twain which is quite a courageous and daunting task for any writer. In this book we see Huckleberry and his friend Jim escape from the confines of "Civilized Society" and hit the open road in search of Freedom and Adventure of which there is plenty of in this book. Huckleberry catches "Gold Fever" and as Mark Twain would have put it "lights out" to California seeking his Fortune. The book has an authentic 1800's feel about it and one can easily forget that this was not written by Mark Twain himself. A Masterpiece and a Joy to read!!!" - John Baranyai. Signed by Author First Edition Fine Hard Cover 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Es kommt wohl all dies zusammen. Aber es würde nicht ausreichen ohne die wunderbare Warm- herzigkeit, mit der Mark Twain uns die Jungen, bei all ihren Unarten, so liebenswert macht. Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Modern Library Classics). Modern Library, 2001
0375757376 Amazon Review A seminal work of American Literature that still commands deep praise and still elicits controversy, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is essential to the understanding of the American soul. The recent discovery of the first half of Twain's manuscript, long thought lost, made front-page news. And this unprecedented edition, which contains for the first time omitted episodes and other variations present in the first half of the handwritten manuscript, as well as facsimile reproductions of thirty manuscript pages, is indispensable to a full understanding of the novel. The changes, deletions, and additions made in the first half of the manuscript indicate that Mark Twain frequently checked his impulse to write an even darker, more confrontational book than the one he finally published. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Publishers Weekly In this centenary year of the first American edition of Huckleberry Finn, Neider, who has worked long and well in the thickets of Twain scholarship (this is the ninth Twain volume he has edited), offers a most fitting tribute, for which he will be thanked in some quarters, damned in others. Neider's contribution is twofold: he has restored to its rightful place the great rafting chapter, which the author had lifted from the manuscript-in-progress and dropped into Life on the Mississippi, and he has abridged some of the childish larkiness in the portions in which Huck's friend Tom Sawyer intrudes into this novel. For decades, critics have lamented the absence of the "missing" chapter and deplored the jarring presence of Tom in episodes that slow the narrative, but not until now has anyone had the temerity to set matters right. In paring back the "Tom" chapters (which he fully documents in his lengthy, spirited introduction, with literal line counts of the excised material), Neider has achieved a brisker read. Though there may be some brickbats thrown at him for this "sacrilege," few should object to the belated appearance of the transplanted rafting chapter in the novel in which it clearly belongs.
