Hodgson, Shadworth H[olloway] (1832-1912): Metaphysic of Experience, Bristol 2000
1855068362

Bristol: Thoemmes Press, [2000]. 4 volumes. 1900pp. Green cloth with painted red spine labels. Very fine copies. Facsimile reprint of the original 1898 London edition. Founder of the Aristotelian Society, Hodgson considerably influenced James and Peirce and stoutly defended epiphenomenalism, which theory he first articulated in his 1870 Theory of Practice. Though in large part working within the framework of Kantian Categories, Hodgson's work is in many ways similar to Husserl's phenomenology, with the major difference that Hodgson grounds consciousness on its neural substrate (thus its epiphenomenal nature). A subtle and important thinker, Hodgson slipped into nearly complete neglect in the 20th century when the Anglo-American philosophical tradition moved in a different direction. Volume 4 includes three useful discussions of Hodgson: G. F. Stout's "The Philosophy of Mr. Shadworth Hodgson," Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society, vol. 1 (1892), pp. 107-120; H. Wildon Carr's "Shadworth Hollway Hodgson," Mind, vol. 21 ns (1912), pp. 473-85; G. Dawes Hicks' "Shadworth Hollway Hodgson," Proceedings of the British Academy, vol. 6 (1913), pp. 508-16. 6 pounds 4.0 ounces = 2.9 kg. 8.9 x 5.8 x 6.2 inches = 22.2 x 14.5 x 15.5cm. HB

Brian Houghton Hodgson was a nineteenth-century administrator and scholar who lived in Nepal, where he was the British Resident from 1820 until 1858. During his time in the Himalayas Hodgson, with extraordinary dedication, laid the foundations for the study of the eastern Himalayan region, writing about many aspects of life and culture. He was among the first westerners to take an interest in Buddhism, both writing about it and collecting manuscripts. He is perhaps best known for his work as an ornithologist and zoologist, writing around 130 papers and commissioning from Nepalese artists a unique series of drawings of birds and mammals. He also wrote about and recorded details of the buildings and architecture of the Kathmandu valley and wrote a series of ethnographic and linguistic papers on Nepal and the Himalayan region. Hodgson donated his collection of writings, specimens and drawings to libraries and museums in Europe, much of which still needs detailed examination. This book critically examines Hodgson's life and achievement, within the context of his contribution to scholarship. It consists of contributions from leading historians of Nepal and South Asia and from specialists in Buddhist studies, art history, linguistics, zoology and ethnography. Many of the drwaings photographed for this book have not previously been published. Contents List of illustrations Notes on contributors Foreword by Thomas R.
