FERBER, (Edna). BUTTERED SIDE DOWN. Stories. With Frontis. in Colour by R. Ford Harper and Other Illus. In Black-and-White by Thomas Fogarty and Irma Deremeaux. Toronto: Copp Clark, no date [1912] ; 1. Ed.

Made from sheets of March 1912, NY: Stokes, first printing with integral title leaf. Dark blue cloth stamped in gilt and blind. pp (viii), 230 pp + colour frontis. with tissue guard + 4 b&w plates, Copp Clark spine imprint. Jacket has Copp Clark spine imprint, but Stokes imprint at bottom of flaps and on rear panel. Ink name, else a very fine copy. Jacket has small triangular chip to head of very slightly darkened spine with loss of parts of three letters. A few nicks and sho rt tears to edges; faint dust soiling; else a fine, bright example. Front panel in colour duplicating the frontis. Rear panel has ads for "new fiction", leading off with THE SECREAT GARDEN. The author's scarce second book, the very scarce Canadian issue, in the rare dust jacket, surely one of the few extant examples given the early date and the likely issue size of only a few hundred copies. Short stories of everyday America early in the century. The energetic Ferber, part of the Algonquin Round Table crowd, became a best-selling author with SHOW BOAT and CIMMARON. Some of her earliest fiction featured a new type of American woman, a business woman, specifically a commercial traveller named Emma McChesney. Whatever the merits of her writing from today's viewpoint (and they are certainly above the average of popular fiction of the time), they are a rich source of American social history. A lovely copy, and rare in this condition. First Canadian edition Hardcover Octavo; First Canadian edition
