Zu seinen Lebzeiten umstritten, gilt der 1839 in Aix-en-Provence geborene Maler heute als Vater der Modere, der - obwohl vom Impressionismus beeinflußt - dem Kubismus den Weg bereitete. Neue Wege zur Kunst suchend, wandte sich Cezanne vom Kreis der Impressionisten ab und kehrte 1889 zurück in die Provence, wo er in Abgeschiedenheit und ohne Kontakt zur Pariser Kunstszene lebt und arbeitet und 1906 stirbt.
