Soon after his release in 1672 he was reimprisoned briefly and wrote the first part of his masterpiece The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come, published in 1678. A second part appeared in 1684. By the time Bunyan was released from his second imprisonment, he had become a hero to the members of his sect, and he continued preaching and writing until his death. The principal works of these later years are The Life and Death of Mr. Badman (1680) and The Holy War (1682). Pilgrim's Progress is an allegory recounting Christian's journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City; the second part describes the manner in which Christian's wife, Christiana, makes the same pilgrimage. Remarkable for its simple, biblical style and its vivid presentation of character and incident, Pilgrim's Progress is considered one of the world's great works of literature. Bunyan's continued popularity rests on the spiritual fervor that permeates his works and on the compelling style in which they are written. His prose unites the eloquence of the Bible with the vigorous realism of common speech Half-Leather 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

xvii, 302 pp.; 18 cm. First published, 1678, 1684. Tight, clean copy. "The Pilgrim's Progress represents religious allegory transformed into intense drama - and features characters who are superbly individualized, indelibly alive, and as memorable as the landmarks on the hero's journey toward salvation. / John Bunyan was born in 1628. In 1644 he was caught up in the Civil War and drafted into the Parliamentary army. Four years later he entered a period of intense spiritual struggle (chronicled in Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners), after which he emerged a new man. He joined a Nonconformist church and began to preach. Bunyan spent many years in prison because of his faith and during this time began writing The Pilgrim's Progress. The first part was published in 1678 and the second part, together with the whole work, was published in 1684. Bunyan died in 1688." - Publisher. Bunyan, John, Illustrated by Harold Copping: The Pilgrim's Progress, From This World To That Which Is To Come Delivered Under The Similitude Of A Dream, London: The Religious Tract Society
No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Pilgrim's Progress, From This World To That Which Is To Come Delivered Under The Similitude Of A Dream; Bunyan, John: London, The Religious Tract Society, nd. 8vo, 320pp, stamped decorative cloth. With 34 colour illustrations by Harold Copping including a. colour frontis. The Pilgrim's Progress holds a unique place in the history of English literature. No other seventeenth- century work except the King James Bible, nothing from the pen of a writer of Bunyan's social class in any period, and no other Christian work, has enjoyed such an extensive readers hip. Bunyan captures the speech of ordinary people as accurately as he depicts their behaviour and appearance and as firmly as he realizes their inner emotional and spiritual life. The tale is related in language remarkable for its beauty and simplicity, and is spiced with Bunyan's acute and satirical perceptions of the vanity and hypocrisy of his own society. Very Good condition with slight bumps to extremities, slight fading to spine, slight pulling at the endpapers. Internally clean and bright with the 34 superb bright clean colour plates by Copping. Many other editions of this period have as few as 8 plates
