Bramah, Ernest: The Secret of the League, Atlanta, GA, U.S.A. Specular Press 1995
ISBN: 1-887207-00-7 Very Good
287 pp plus glossary. Newly edited, with an introduction and glossary by Daniel Jengka. A clean copy with straight supple binding. Light corner wear. "The story centers around one man's daring and ingenious plan, enacted through a mysterious alliance called the Unity League, to stop the workings of the nation's elected government in order to restore some measure of lost freedom and greatness, even at the risk of civil war." A provocotive-sounding narrative, at least. That the skilled and reclusive Bramah, author of the Kai Lung fantasy books, might advocate the thwarting of democratic institutions by a capitalist elite, was likely born of a common upper-middle class hysteria of the time, writes Orwell in his review of this book. The 'strong' non-parliamentary, pro-capitalist regime installed in the book would later be recognized as Fascist, though it long preceded Franco, Mussolini, Hitler, and an unsuccessful 1930s coup attempt by corporate powers in the United States. The obscure and uncommon Secret of the League is now sometimes compared to Atlas Shrugged, and was a likely candidate for Specular Press to reprint as the first title in their aptly named Capitalist Fiction series.
