It takes the reader step by step through the dyeing process, explains how to make a 'file' of dye samples, and gives many useful recipes. There are chapters devoted to ancient, foreign and rare dyes from plants, shellfish and insects, dyeing with lichens, and the various sources of indigo. Much original information is included on the successful cultivation and use of woad, with which the author has been experimenting for twenty years. For those teachers who wish to start dyeing classes in school, there is valuable advice drawn from the author's personal experience in this field. Finally, Jill Goodwin, whose own family and home are clothed and upholstered with beauti ful fabrics which she has dyed herself, suggests practical uses for the fruits of your labour.
