Alexander Calder (1898-1976), American sculptor. A.L.S., "Alexander Calder", Roxbury, CT, 31 May [19]38, 1 p. large 4to. To the art historian Alexander Dorner (1893-1957): "[...] I was very much chagrined to miss meeting you at Russell Hitchcock's, and to miss your lecture. I have been hearing about you from the Sweeneys and from Gabo, too. And if you should come this way again I would very much like to have you come to see us, and spend the night, if that fits in with your schedule [...]". - Until 1936, Dorner was the director of the Hanover museum. In 1937, he emigrated to the USA, where he was director of the museum at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI from 1938 until 1941. It was here that he taught at the university until 1948, when he moved to Bennington College in Vermont. Around 1930, Calder began building the first of his famous "Mobiles", by which he created a new form of art. In 1937 he designed a fountain for the Spanish pavilion at the World Fair in Paris. The architecture historian Henry Russell-Hitchcock (1903-1987) taught at Smith College and at the University of New York. He wrote influential books dealing with modern architecture. James Johnson Sweeny (1900-1986), the curator of the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum, published monographs concerned with Calder. The highly talented Russian artist Maum Gabo (1890-1977) was a teacher at the Bauhaus. He had emigrated to the USA via London in 1933. - Handwritten letters of Calder are very rare.

Dorner war bis 1936 Museumsdirektor in Hannover gewesen. Er emigrierte 1937 in die USA, wo er 1938-41 das Museum der "Rhode Island School of Design" in Providence leitete und an der dortigen Universität lehrte, bis er 1948 an das Bennington College in Vermont wechselte. Calder hatte um 1930 begonnen, die ersten seiner berühmten "Mobiles" zu bauen und damit eine neue Kunstgattung zu schaffen. 1937 entwarf er seinen Brunnen für den spanischen Pavillon auf der Pariser Weltausstellung. Der Architekturhistoriker Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903-1987) lehrte am Smith College und an der New York University. Er verfasste einflussreiche Bücher über moderne Architektur. James Johnson Sweeney (1900-1986), Kurator des "Museum of Modern Art" und des "Guggenheim Museum", hat 1951 und 1958 Monographien über Calder veröffentlicht. Der vielseitige russische Künstler Naum Gabo (1890-1977) war Lehrer am Bauhaus gewesen und 1933 über London in die USA emigriert. Eigenhändige und mit vollem Namen signierte Briefe von Calder sind sehr selten.
